The Long-Forgotten History of the British Moon Spacesuit

Decades before NASA's Apollo program, the British Interplanetary Society wanted to go to the moon: in a spacesuit that looked like a suit of armour.

Thanks to all the team at the National Space Centre:
And to the British Interplanetary Society for their archive images:

Drone filming by special permission of the National Space Centre. Please do not attempt it yourself, the Rocket Tower is made of ETFE foil on a steel frame and propellers must not get close to it!

More about the BIS spacesuit:

  • Unfortunately, the British spacesuit model isn't available for anyone to wear, which is a shame! But it is on display at the Rocket Tower. And apparently one idea for that on-suit airlock was passing in sandwiches for lunch...

    • @Ricky Spanish I don't think prisoners would do it, I think hired minors from future companies that wanna make money would because in order to mine safely, they need a lot of saftey precautions. In fact, they would probably just use robots

      The B BuddiesThe B Buddies13 dagar sedan
    • @The B Buddies Actually that's probably how it'll happen, countries would place colonies on the moon to run mining, prison and medical research outposts and then send prisoners there, some would be used to gather minerals or helium 3, and the others to be experimented on outside of the law. People would get assurances the most 'dangerous' criminals couldn't get back and likely run with it.

      Ricky SpanishRicky Spanish13 dagar sedan
    • @Ricky Spanish so what your saying is that they would send there prisoners to to moon like Australia?

      The B BuddiesThe B Buddies13 dagar sedan
    • We'd just grant them independence like Canada and Australia if they stay a trading partner, we can stitch them up that way.

  • I remember Scott Manley's video on this. They were concerned zero-G wouldn't be survivable, so their capsule idea would spin to give a bit of artificial gravity. They also designed a special astrolabe that's usable in a spinning spacecraft for navigation.

    MohitMohit20 dagar sedan
    • Britain had to pay war debt both for world war 1 and 2 and decolonisation, they paid off the debts for the former in 2008 and the latter in 2015. Meanwhile Britain has been testing space tech for Nasa and building satellites such as Galileo for the European Space Agency but with a growing trade deal with Australia, Canada and New Zealand and launch sites being built in South England and Northern Scotland they might restart their space program within the next decade.
